500 words. I hit a wall today—physically and figuratively.
My day started at 5:30 sharp because I did a live podcast with ALLi. So much for getting rest after vacation! Plus, I’m on shuttle duty getting my daughter to school this week so my mornings are shot.
I got writing in, though. I hit a spot in the story that required me to review what I wrote again because I wasn’t sure what needed to come next. In other words, I moved forward today, but I did it by moving backward first.
The weird part is that I can see ahead probably 5-7K words, but not the immediate chapters ahead. I have a sense of where the story is headed, but not what the next step should be.
I can see “pockets” of things happening in the story very clearly. I just need to figure out how to get there. It’ll be interesting once the dots start connecting. Right now everything still feels disconnected.
The good thing is that this is normal in any manuscript, especially one that I’ve been away from for so long. I never let that scare me—there always comes a moment somewhere between 50-75 percent where I realize, “oh! That’s why I wrote that!” Or, “oh! Everything is coming together nicely!” Then, it’s a race to the finish.
The best way through any rough patch is forward, even if it’s just a few hundred words at a time.
Still, I got my 500 words in and that’s a beautiful thing. I think once I get past this rough patch of chapters, I’ll be able to finally quicken my pace. I’m looking forward to hitting cruising speed on this one.
But in the meantime, I’m tired. Have a good night.
