500 words today (so far). Stay tuned for a confession……….
Since Wednesday, I’ve omitted a very important detail about my writing sessions.
But hey, it was kind of fun withholding it just to give myself a mini challenge.
Since Wednesday, I’ve been on vacation in Florida. Just got home tonight.
6400 words, 100% on my phone, on a family vacation that I enjoyed (went to Disney World), writing only in nooks and crannies of free time.
Here’s what actually happened:
WEDNESDAY: I worked half a day and then went to the airport to catch a lunchtime flight to Houston. On the flight there, which was about 2 hours, I clocked about 1000 words.
In the airport while waiting for my second flight to Orlando (another 2ish hours), I netted some more after dinner. On the flight to Orlando, I netted another easy 1000. I put my headphones in and focused solely on words. No exceptions. After we got to the hotel, I closed with around 3100 words before bed. As you can imagine with a family, I had lots of interruptions, but I still did pretty good.
THURSDAY: Went to Epcot. I had finished the writing app book at this point and it was crazy hot, so I whipped out my phone during times when we had some family downtime seeking some shade and water. Most of my writing sessions were 5-10 min at a time.
FRIDAY: Magic Kingdom. Same thing, except I was editing the book and reviewing what I wrote. Very easy to do in small pockets in the park while waiting for rides or sitting down to take a break. We had a rainstorm move on us in the afternoon but it ultimately didn’t rain. We took shelter under a shaded building. Guess what I did while we waited for the lightning to pass? On a separate note, I had my best session at Tomorrow Land, in front of Auntie Gravity’s Shop, watching the Astro Orbiter and finishing a root bear float, writing with one hand.
SATURDAY: Took an Amtrak from Orlando to West Palm Beach just because. Got all of my 1000 words on the train while also stopping to enjoy the ride and getting some snacks in the lounge car. Oh yeah, this was the time I started writing Rat City. I RESTARTED this novel on the train, which is crazy if I think about it.
SUNDAY: Flew home. Did all my words on the flights.
Again, 6400 words during a family vacation. We had a great time and I didn’t write when we were on rides at the park, during family time or anything crazy like that. I wrote purely in “the cracks of life.” I wrote when other people would be on Facebook or checking emails or watching YouTube.
And trust me, I did a lot of people-watching, too. And I chatted with some interesting folks too.
6400 words on a vacation, in the time of great forgetting (when writers forget to write), when I was crazy tired, on my phone. Amazing what you can do if you retrain your brain.
If you add up my word counts for the entire week, I’m over 10,000, so looking at the numbers, you’d never even know I was on vacation.
#BEASTMODE
Anyway, today was a bit slower since I was traveling home. I took a nap on one of the flights instead of writing for a change.
I’ve got an ALLi podcast tomorrow at 5:30AM and I’m back at work, so no rest for the weary.
Have a good night.
